Today, Greedy Gordon is still there with elbows out, sorry hand out - I
guess we are in for a hiding the next four years. Seriously, if the RYA or
anyone else cannot sway this government, HMC or Brussels to keep the
dispensation on marine diesel then my days owning a power boat must be
numbered. I personally use my boat for weekending and coastal fishing. My
recreation and pastime will soon be wrecked by a bunch of faceless
bureaucrats.

Don't know what all the fuss is about. we don't have to buy diesel, we are playing. the extra cost will mean one less pint in the pub after a day out.

That was my first response a while ago, but when one thinks some of
these powerboast measure their consumption in gallons per hour (I do
mine in hours per gallon) and they think nothing of working against
wind & tide you can see why some are getting jumpy.

What concerns me is that we will get lumbered with the full
tax/duty/vat as levied on Derv and that goes way above what
harmonisation would require.

Mine burns around 1/2 ton per hour

Doesn't the Severn class lifeboat use about 100gallons per hour per side?
I know they are the richest charity but it would seriously affect them.

My understanding is that it is only leisure use that will get taxed, so
non-commercial boating, off roading, tank driving etc will all get
taxed. Farmers, fishermen (don't know about the charter boats though),
and I am sure the RNLI stays as it is.

Spent the last 25 yrs working my way up from 16ft to a 33ft boat. I have two
350 hp engines. A coastal fishing trip 1.5 hrs each way burns say 110 ltrs
that is say 15miles each way / 20 knots. A full day of 12 hrs say 45 miles
each way engine used whole time (wrecking) uses 420 ltrs. I do not race, the
boat is capable of 30 knots - each boat has its optimum speed vs economy.
Regret labours tax regime is getting into every corner of our lives. If we
harmonise our fuel prices with the EU they will come down and marine diesel
may be bearable - just. However prefer to see things remain as they are.
If we harmonise to UK road fuel prices there will be a lot of cheap boats
about.

The tax will almost certainly only apply to pleasure boats. How about
running on heating oil? Not much difference in spec'.
To solve all our problems we only need to leave the EU that we never voted
for.

It will be illegal, just as running your car on the stuff would be.

At the moment it looks as though we'll still be able to run on anything
we like outside EU territorial waters. Perhaps the answer is to fit two
tanks, one for taxed diesel for use in territorial waters and the other
for chip oil/heating oil/red diesel purchased abroad, for use in
international waters.
